The David Kitson Library Annual Benefit

One of the most poignant ingredients about the community of Nosara is how people pull together to help out with a great cause. Another is that there is always something fun going on around here. Fortunately, the most common theme for helping out a great cause in Nosara is providing entertainment of some sort at an event. Recent events for local schools in the community include a hot dog eating contest & surfing contest for the Surfing Nosara Foundation and multiple silent auctions for Del Mar Academy & Save The Howler Monkeys Foundation. However, the most recent event was the annual fundraiser for the David Kitson Memorial Library which was a dinner-theater event at the clubhouse in Selvamar.

The cornerstone of the event was a production of Neil Simon's play, The Sunshine Boys, directed Kim Shook. The 120 or so persons who attended were treated to a hilarious show featuring Buzzy Maxwell, Don Savage, Carolyn Faimel, Kathy Santeiro, Peter Burke, Micki Savage, Alice Olson, and Annmarie Ermatinger. Marlin Bill's catered the event with some excellent food and Selvamar's beautiful new clubhouse of course was the ideal location for this year's benefit.

The money raised for this event goes directly to the Biblioteca David Kitson AKA David Kitson Memorial Library, located in the village of Nosara. Many of us from the US, Canada or Europe take for granted always having a library available. However, that is not necessarily the case here in Costa Rica. It is due to the extraordinary efforts of people people like Beverly Kitson and a few other individuals that there is a functioning library for the village of Nosara. Currently, there are over 6000 volumes, 75 library cards issued, and the locals here are able to use computers and typewriters for their school work. They also participate in arts and crafts and provide aid to students in the GED program. To learn more about the library, visit their website: http://www.discoverypress.com/library/index.htm.
