I'm flying into SJO in the beginning of March and would like to take the new highway that just opened at the end of January. I was looking at a map and was a bit confused about what highway Erik was talking about. Is the new Highway route 27? 27 looks to run parallel to highway 3 and then it meets up with highway 23. Also, do you then take the Puntarenas ferry to Naranjo?
Thanks for your help.

http://www.autopistasdelsolcr.com/mapa.php here is a good map you can zoom in on. I'm headiing down on the 12th of March. Unless I hear otherwise it looks like I'll exit Rental car facility to the right and follow signs to San Ramon as usual then drop down to the new road at the first oportunity.

I just took the new highway from the airport to Nosara. Per the directions on this site, you head towards San Jose on the Pan American for about 15 minutes. Then turn right and you're on it.
It is much more pleasant, safer too I think. If you have to do a nite drive, the lines and reflectors will be a treat.
But I saved no time.
Using the Pan American, I usually get to the Guanacaste turn off in 2 hours (+-) including some time behind a truck doing 10kmh up a hill, no speeding and no dangerous passing.
On the new highway, you can cruise at the speed limit all the time.
But I guess the 15 minutes going north instead of south plus the time to get back to the starting point once on the new highway negate any advantages.
So if you want a nicer, safer drive, especially at nite, use it. But just to save time from the airport to Nosara, I don't believe it will work for you. I didn't for me.
reverse my "north and south"
