There are many different ways to raise money for non-profit foundations. They range from huge galas and sit down dinner balls to 10K races and even Hot Dog Eating Contests. Well, now the Surfing Nosara Foundation has one more unique one to credit - a tropical themed Keg Party in the middle of a blizzard! We all remember how fun Keg parties are, especially when you sneak them into your college dorm. However, most of the time, as broke college kids you try to make your money back on the keg by charging up to $5 per cup. Well, we had some fans of the site go about their kegger a bit differently.
Last week Mike Vascak dropped by the Surfing Nosara office and handed us a bunch of school supplies that he collected from his friends at the keg party he threw back in the Washington, D.C. area. Mike is an avid fan of the site and checks it frequently, especially prior to traveling down here for vacation. So, he noticed all the fundraising that the SNF was doing and he saw his Birthday/Christmas party as a great opportunity to raise some donations for our Foundation. Mike considers himself a “small-time” philanthropist and is involved in Habitat for Humanity and the Surfrider foundation in the D.C. area. He also mentioned that he and his friends/co-workers at the National Institute of Health (NIH) get involved in volunteer work as often as they can. So, all the party goers shared the same passion for giving back and were more than happy to donate some much needed school supplies to the Foundation.
Mike and his roommates considered the party to be a success, but not quite as many people could show up as they hoped since it was smack in the middle of the blizzard that blanketed the Northeast a few days before Christmas. However, he did say that about 20 people were there to help decorate the “Kegmas” tree, celebrate the first big snow in years and share in the holiday spirit. Many of them got snowed in and had such a good time that they had to crash at Mike’s house that night. All in all, Mike said that everyone had a great time, donated a ton of school supplies for the Surfing Nosara Foundation, and had to dig themselves out the next morning. Mike and his roommates have promised to have another kegger soon because of the small turnout. Next time he will make sure to schedule it so that it doesn’t interfere with any impending blizzards.
So, from all of us here at Surfing Nosara we extend a huge thank you to Mike Vascak and his roommates, Matt Berberich and Bonnie Bratnober for raising money for the Foundation in a very creative way. You all are an inspiration for anyone out there that wants to give a little or a lot to great cause. So, in February, when the kids get back to class after their break, we will distribute all of the school supplies to a number of schools in the community.
If anyone out there is raising money or donations for the Surfing Nosara Foundation through any types of fundraisers back home in the States (or where ever you may be), please let us know about it so that we can recognize you for your generous efforts.
