About Cartago

Cartago, the Spanish settlement established in 1563 by Coronado, is nestled in the foothills of the Irazu Volcano. Both coasts of the country can easily be accessed from here, as the city is centrally-located. Living here gives residents quick access to both the Caribbean coast and turtle watching as well as surfing trips to the Pacific Ocean. Inland adventurers enjoy an abundance of hiking, trekking, horseback riding, and climbing opportunities.

Cartago boasts an impressive backdrop of lush mountains and active volcanoes that still attract curious thrill-seekers from all over the world. Whether you’re a hiking novice or a seasoned trekker, this breathtaking landscape offers activities for every skill level. From volcano climbing and mountain biking to leisurely treks through the tropical forest bird watching, Cartago will not disappoint.

A volcano partially destroyed the area in 1732, costing Cartago its status as Costa Rica’s capital city. Exploring the ruins of this former capital is a popular tourist attraction as the current city is built around the ruins. This gives Cartago a very unique feel and visitors often find their inner archaeologists awakened. Photographers love the city and its juxtaposition of ancient and modern. Not far from the ruins is the Museo Municipal de Cartago. Inside you will find some of Costa Rica’s most technologically advanced museum exhibits, digital libraries, as well as live theater performances.

From here walk along the avenue to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels. Its architecture is a standout among the world’s churches as it is a compelling mixture of Byzantine and colonial Spanish styles. Its uniqueness makes it easily recognizable to the thousands of people making pilgrimages offering prayers to La Negrita.

The town center is a popular meeting place for locals and ex-pats alike. It’s the perfect setting for meeting friends, enjoying coffee in its many cafes, or trying native street cuisine.

The town itself is surrounded by rich farmland where local organic produce is harvested. Residents enjoy fresh vegetables delivered to markets daily, as well as exquisite native orchids. Orchid farms blanket the region with vibrant color and unforgettable photo opportunities.

More floral delights await at Lankester Botanical Gardens. Guaria Morada orchids, Costa Rica’s official flower, are studied and grown here along with many other orchid varieties. The gardens’ serene surroundings are a popular place for weddings and other special events.

If you’re hungry for more archaeological adventures travel 40 kilometers outside of town to Guayabo National Monument. 3,000-year-old pre-Columbian ruins rest peacefully here waiting to be explored.

Animal lovers should not miss Irazu National Park. Hike up to the top of an active volcano and climb the viewing towers for a spectacular view over the park. Then hike one of the existing trails and meet armadillos, foxes, hummingbirds, and owls.
