Cartago, the Spanish settlement established in 1563 by Coronado, is nestled in the foothills of the Irazu Volcano. More floral delights await at Lankester Botanical Gardens. Guaria Morada orchids, Costa Rica’s official flower, are studied and grown here along with many other orchid varieties. The gardens’ serene surroundings are a popular place for weddings and other special events.

If you’re hungry for more archaeological adventures travel 40 kilometers outside of town to Guayabo National Monument. 3,000-year-old pre-Columbian ruins rest peacefully here waiting to be explored.

Animal lovers should not miss Irazu National Park. Hike up to the top of an active volcano and climb the viewing towers for a spectacular view over the park. Then hike one of the existing trails and meet armadillos, foxes, hummingbirds, and owls.
