About Golfito

The southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica is as close to paradise as one can get. Golfito is a perfect example of this. In addition to being a surfer’s dream with the accompanying laidback vibe, it also has all the amenities one needs to live comfortably. Now a well-developed tourist attraction, this former banana trade port received government assistance in making sure the development was also kind to the beautiful environment.

Costa Ricans are known for their respect for nature and natural resources. Every town like Golfito is carefully monitored as it is developing to ensure the biodiversity and wildlife of the area are protected along the way. This means villa clusters instead of corporate hotels, small cafes and eateries instead of chain restaurants, and renewable resources used as much as possible during construction. This wonderful philosophy and commitment to eco-conscious tourism have resulted in visitors and new residents who respect the earth as much as native Costa Ricans do.

A quaint little fishing village awaits as you arrive by water taxi, bus, or small plane. As you explore the town small shops and locally-owned cafes tempt you with specialties you won’t find anywhere else. Street vendors set up along the main drag and the scent of organic fruit fills the air. Once you’ve sampled the local cuisine, you can book one of many exciting day trips for sport fishing, trekking, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, or whale watching.

Don’t miss your chance to visit Cano Island, just a short boat ride away. Scuba diving here is pure enchantment as sea turtles, manta rays, and dolphins welcome you to their home. Along with many colorful reefs, you’ll see ancient underwater ruins dating back to pre-Columbian times. The mystery of large, spherical stones dotting the seafloor will amaze you as they have thousands of previous divers.

As you can imagine, the sportfishing in Golfito is some of the best in the world. It’s not unusual to return from your trip with a record catch of blue marlin, yellowfish tuna, or sailfish. If you prefer inland fishing while relaxing in a tropical forest you can expect to reel in barracuda, cuberas, or roosterfish.

Eco-travelers can delight in the natural wonders found at nearby Corcovado National Park. Named by National Geographic as the most biodiverse place on earth, the evidence is clear in the park’s abundance of thriving wildlife species. Come and marvel at 400 bird species, over 100 species of butterflies, as well as many species of frogs, turtles, and monkeys.

Speaking of birds, enjoy a symphony from the treetops at Piedras Blancas National Park. Birds will serenade you from their high branches as you trek through the lush tropical landscape. You might also see jaguar and coatis along the way.
